Milk Tavern, Boozy Dessert & Cereal Bar in Koreatown L.A.

Hello and welcome to Food Adventures with Linny.

I’m Linny, your host. Allow me to bring you along on a journey to try all the interesting, unique, and crazy food that I can get my hands on – from my travels around the world to my own backyard in California. Enough with the introductions, let’s get to the food.

For our first food adventure, we are in LA at the self-proclaimed “adult playground” Milk Tavern. Milk Tavern was the first major cereal bar on the west coast, offering 18 different choices of cereals and toppings! They also make small batch boozy ice cream. Yum.

Smack dap in the heart of LA’s Koreatown which is known for its delicious eats, you can find Milk Tavern. What better to cleanse the palate after some Korean BBQ than some booze-infused ice cream, right? Their motto #OLDERKIDSHEAVEN and the “ultimate playground for adults” is apparent in their menu full of creative combinations of boozy ice cream, cereal, and candy.

Besides the food, the space itself is another example of Milk Tavern’s adult playground concept. The shop boasts a ping pong table, classic Nintendo, bean bag toss, and patio complete with a large inflatable rubber ducky floaty for patrons to enjoy. I for one had no choice but to take a ride on the ducky.

While the space is cool, the real reason you come here is for the crazy food and desserts. And possibly to get a cool picture for Instagram. Here you can make all of your childhood food fantasies come to life, some with an adult flair. Just be prepared to leave here expecting a sugar crash soon to follow. Note that all prices listed are from the time of this post in case they change at all. You can check the online Milk Tavern menu for up-to-date pricing. Here are the treats we tried during our visit to this fun dessert bar:

Boozy Ice Cream Float

Cost: $4.90 (Single)

To start things off, we ordered an adult ice cream float made with Kalua infused ice cream paired with a stout beer. Needless to say, this treat was mostly for Peter as I’m not much of a beer drinker. Peter loved it and it was gone before we even got the rest of our food. He almost bought a pint of the ice cream to bring home to recreate the float himself. If you’re like me and not much of a beer lover, don’t fret. Milk Tavern offers their boozy float creations in a wide variety of drinks including wine, tequila, Kalua, Jameson, and more. Next time I definitely want to try the wine ice cream float!

Peanut Butter Attack Cereal

Cost: $5.90

Growing up my favorite food was cereal. It is still one of my favorite foods. Weird? Maybe. But I was super pumped to try one of Milk Tavern’s sugar-rush cereal creations. It is a cereal bar, after all! First, you choose what style you’d like it in – either as an ice cream swirl (1 cereal, 1 topping, with a vanilla base), a milkshake (1 cereal, 1 topping, with milk and vanilla base), or as a traditional milk and cereal bowl (2 cereals, 1 topping, with milk). Next, pick your cereal(s). Again, they have 18 different cereals to choose from! Basically every sugary cereal you can think of, including Fruit Loops, Lucky Charms, Captain Crunch, and even Oreo O’s. Finally, choose your topping and add extra toppings for $0.50. They have everything from fruit like bananas and strawberries to candy like gummy bears and Oreos.

I ended up ordering one of their signature blends in a milk and cereal bowl: Peanut Butter Attack. This came with Reese’s Puffs, Cocoa Krispies, and Reese’s Pieces candy. It was my inner-child’s dream come true. I was a little skeptical about putting candy into my cereal, but it ended up being amazing. It really was a chocolate and peanut butter fantasy come to life. Our next visit I’ll have to create my own crazy concoction with the vast variety of options!

Rainbow Grilled Cheese

Cost: $8.00

I love cheese. I also love colors. So naturally, I loved Milk Tavern’s Rainbow Grilled Cheese panini. Hard to mess up a mozzarella grilled cheese though. Besides their fantastical desserts, Milk Tavern does offer some more savory food options such as paninis. All of their paninis are pressed on their own house sourdough bread, which was fresh and delicious. Along with their instagram famous Rainbow Grilled Cheese, they offer some more traditional options such as an Italian and House Grilled Cheese as well as indulgent paninis like Monkey Business (nutella + banana slices) and a Frosted Flakes grilled cheese!

Cotton Candy Ice Cream Burrito

Cost: $7.90

Possibly what Milk Tavern is most known for is their Cotton Candy Ice Cream Burrito. Yes, you read that right. This is literally a burrito made with vanilla ice cream, Fruit Loops cereal and possibly also Fruity Pebbles, all wrapped in a thick layer of either blue or pink cotton candy fluff. It’s as if they had a 5 year old devise their next hit menu item (in the best way). The cereal acts as a barrier between the ice cream and the cotton candy so that the cotton fluff doesn’t instantly dissolve.

I was curious how this ridiculous sugar bomb would actually taste, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was honestly delicious. While super sugary, the vanilla ice cream helped mellow things out so that it wasn’t over-the-top sweet in my opinion. I’m not sure if I would want more than the half I had though or I’d be worried about slipping into a sugar coma. As it was, Peter and I crashed shortly after getting home.
